HIIT (high intensity interval training), also known as spirit interval training (SIT), is a form of cardio that alternates between periods of high intensity anaerobic exercise and periods of low intensity recovery. Some of the benefits of HIIT are more efficient fat burning, enhanced glucose metabolism, and increased endurance.
This theory of exercise can be applied to your favorite type of workout. For example, if you like to swim, run, or bicycle, for 60 seconds go at the highest intensity you possible can. Next, go at a low intensity for 60 seconds and repeat the process 10 times. Some of the most popular types of HIIT workouts are CrossFit, Insanity, and P90X. Like all forms of exercise it is important not to over exert yourself and take precautions to be safe. If it is your first time trying one of these high intensity interval training workouts, try a beginners class. Not only will you learn the safest ways to complete these exercises, but an instructor can explain which ones are best for you and how to do them on your own.
Below are some videos that further explain what high intensity interval training is and some samples of HIIT workouts.
