This weeks “Dinner and a Movie,” is going to be a little bit different, because instead of featuring just one movie, we are focusing on a bigger event that celebrates a lot of movies – The Golden Globes. The Golden Globes are airing on Sunday (January 12), and are again being hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, so they are sure to be a real riot. While some of the GG awards are for work in Television, the real focus is on the movie awards, as it is often believed that the Golden Globes tend to foreshadow what will happen at the Oscars in a few weeks time. Even though the Globes divide movies up into Drama and Musical/Comedy categories, the winners at the two major awards shows usually coincide. A lot of popular movies are up for a Golden Globe this year, ranging from “12 Years a Slave” and “Gravity” in the drama category to “American Hustle” and “The Wolf of Wall Street” in the Comedy/Musical category. There are plenty of predictions about who will probably win the awards, but these kinds of shows are usually full of upsets, so we won’t know for sure if Leo DiCaprio is going to get snubbed again until Sunday.
One thing that sets the Golden Globes apart from some of the other, more stuffy, awards shows is that it is also a dinner. While Fey and Poehler entertain from the stage, the other celebs in attendance will be feasting on a delicious meal. We took inspiration from the official GG Menu, and gathered up some recipes that will let you recreate the meal at home. So while you watch your favorite celebrities get drunk off champagne and eat a 5-star meal, you can join them from home drinking Barefoot bubbly and pretending you are eating the same meal as your favorite actor and actress. Here is our Golden Globes inspired menu:
The real Golden Globes appetizer consists of three parts, so there will probably be 3 separate and beautifully plated small appetizers. Since it isn’t really practical for a home-cook to make 3 plated appetizers, I tried to find recipes that still used the same flavors, but are more accessible. I found the answer in hummus. Here are 3 delicious hummus recipes, each one featuring the flavor profile of one of the appetizer components. You can pick your favorite, or if you are entertaining, or really love hummus, you might want to go for all 3.
1. Roasted Eggplant and Chickpea Dip (via Living Well Spending Less)
2. Roasted Red Pepper and Feta Hummus (via Cooking for Keeps)
3. Roasted Artichoke Hummus (via The Scrumptious Pumpkin)
And if you want to make some homemade pita chips to go along with that hummus, check out this super simple recipe.
For their main course, the celebrities will be served a Surf’n’ Turf combo featuring braised beef short ribs and a filet of smoked trout. Surf ‘n’ turf can be tricky to do at home as well, and even though this one doesn’t involve the most expensive of ingredients, making two proteins can be a lot of money and a lot of work. I’ve included a short rib and a trout recipe, so you can combine them if you please, or just make whichever meat you prefer to eat!
Braised Beef Short Ribs (via Chew Nibble Nosh)
Braising is an excellent way to get perfectly tender and succulent beef, and is also a great technique to employ when you don’t have the time to stand around babysitting something. You can either pop it in the oven for a few hours, or use a slow cooker if you have one. If you want to make your short ribs a little closer to the ones that will be at the Golden Globes, you can try adding some classic Mediterranean spices, like oregano and coriander.
Seared Trout with Peach and Arugula Salad (via Blue Apron)
The chef at the Golden Globes will be using smoked trout, but this recipe uses fresh fish. Trout and braised short ribs sounds like a strange combo to me, but I’m not a chef, so what do I know.
Since the awards show is called the Golden Globes, the dessert is a play on the gold theme, and will be an almond sponge cake with creme anglaise and a tropical fruit compote, obviously with a gold-dusted chocolate decoration on top. If you aren’t a pastry chef, here are two simpler desserts that have similar flavor profiles, but aren’t dusted in gold. Sorry.
1. Angel Food Cake with Strawberries and Mango Sauce (via Oh, Sweet Basil)
If baking isn’t your thing, this dessert is perfect for you, boxed angel food cake mix is essentially foolproof, you only have to add water and you don’t even need to grease your pan. And with a simple mango sauce, this dessert is fresh and tropical.
2. Mango Chiffon Pie (via Oh, Sweet Basil)
Fruity and creamy, this pie looks absolutely delicious. And if you want to get even closer to the Golden Globe’s flavor profile, you could probably build your pie in an almond crust, like this one.
Will you be eating like the stars during the Golden Globes?
